Oscar-nominated Allied film costumes on display...

Last year La La Land wasn't the only movie trying to evoke classic Hollywood nostalgia, as the romantic WWII wartime spy thriller Allied was also trying to channel iconic movies like Casablanca. Joanna Johnston was responsible for bringing some old Hollywood glamour to the proceedings and has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Achievement in Costume Design for her efforts for a second time.

These 1940s-inspired costumes from the 2016 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis were photographed on display at FIDM Museum's 25th Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition on February 8, 2017 in Downtown L.A.

In the movie Brad Pitt plays a Canadian intelligence officer stationed in North Africa during World War II who meets Marion Cotillard's French Resistance fighter on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines, but when they rekindle their romance in London their relationship is tested because she may be a clandestine Nazi spy in disguise.

Last year's Zoolander 2 was a sequel fifteen years in the making, reuniting Ben Stiller's cult clueless fashion model 'Derek Zoolander' with Owen Wilson's equally dumb and narcissistic 'Hansel' as they are drawn into an investigation of a string of celebrity deaths with Derek's trademark 'Blue Steel' look on their faces.

Ben Stiller reprises his the role as the dimwitted male fashion model in the sequel to the 2001 original and this dazzling sequined look seems to be channeling iconic entertainer, Liza Minnelli.

Owen Wilson's 'Hansel' is also coaxed out of hiding alongside side his oft-quoted friend to walk the comedy catwalk once more for fashion icon 'Alexanya Atoz' and designer 'Don Atari'.

In the movie Kristen Wiig plays a Donatella Versace-esque character, all plastic surgery and outlandish high fashion, and this hilarious costume illustrates the fun the filmmakers had at the fashion industry's expense in the comedy.

Fences movie costumes on display...

I love this time of year in the run up to the Oscars, when there are so many good movies to enjoy before the golden statuettes are handed out. The costumes in the adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play Fences may not be nominated for an Academy Award on this occasion, but the film and actors involved are nominated for four Oscars.

The movie is set in 1950s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and stars Denzel Washington (who also directed the film) as 53-year-old 'Troy Maxson', a trash collector struggling to provide for his family and reconcile his past dreams in Major League Baseball hampered by the colour of his skin, whilst living with and cheating on his wife 'Rose' (Viola Davis) and his aspiring football player son 'Cory' (Jovan Adepo), and looking after his war damaged ex-soldier younger brother 'Gabriel' (Mykelti Williamson).

Former Oscar-nominee Sharen Davis was Costume Designer on this film adaptation of the Broadway play which earned both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis a Tony Award.
